Feminist Violence on International Women’s Day in Latin America

SAVE

May 2, 2025

International Women’s Day (IWD) originally was designed to commemorate the progress in assuring gender equality for women. In recent years, however, IWD increasingly has been marked by acts of destruction of property, confrontations with the police, and violence. Following are accounts from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru of the IWD events held on March 8, 2025.

ARGENTINA

During the International Women’s Day marches in Argentina, particularly in Buenos Aires, there were reports of confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. Some demonstrators attempted to breach security barriers near the Casa Rosada, leading to police responses involving tear gas and rubber bullets. These actions resulted in multiple injuries and detentions.

In Córdoba, similar incidents occurred when protesters clashed with police forces, leading to several arrests. (1)

Destruction of Public Property

There were multiple instances of damage of public property : (2)

  • Buenos Aires: Monuments, public furniture, and transportation stations were damaged.
  • Mendoza: Protesters set fire to garbage containers and broke windows of government buildings.
  • Rosario: Looting of shops and destruction in public areas were reported.

Nearly 300 Federal Police officers were deployed around the protest, which many protestors interpreted as an act of intimidation and repression. (3)

CHILE

On March 8, 2025, Chile witnessed significant unrest during International Women’s Day, particularly in the capitol city Santiago, where peaceful demonstrations escalated into violent confrontations.

Santiago

After the conclusion of the 8M march in Santiago, groups of masked individuals ignited barricades along the Alameda, between Lord Cochrane and Los Héroes. These individuals threw objects at Carabineros (Chilean police), prompting the use of water cannons to disperse the crowd. The situation disrupted traffic and public transportation in the city center. (1)

Police actions:

Chile’s national police, the Carabineros, implemented a security operation during the event. According to Colonel Estrella Sotelo, 13 people were detained: six due to outstanding arrest warrants, one for drug dealing, one for concealing identity and carrying a bladed weapon, and three for public disorder. One woman was injured by glass from a thrown bottle and was taken to the Ex Posta Central hospital.

Vesna Madariaga, spokesperson for Coordinadora 8M, explained the rationale for the demonstration, saying, “We gather to defend our rights.” Earlier that day, President Gabriel Boric and Minister for Women and Gender Equality Antonia Orellana led a commemorative event in Quinta Normal, featuring a performance by singer Myriam Hernández. COLOMBIA

What began as a peaceful demonstration to commemorate International Women’s Day in Bogotá, escalated into violent incidents and acts of vandalism in several parts of the city (1).

 Timeline of Events

  • Start of the march: The main protest began around 3:00 p.m. at the mural “Las cuchas tienen razón” (Calle 45 with Carrera 7), and proceeded toward the Plaza of the Bogotá City Council.
  • Peaceful development: For several hours, the march remained peaceful, with thousands of women chanting slogans and carrying banners in defense of women’s rights.
  • Escalation of violence: Around 6:00 p.m., reports emerged of vandalism in various areas of the city. Groups of masked individuals damaged businesses and public infrastructure.

Infrastructure Damage and Mobility Disruptions

  • TransMilenio: The TransMilenio public transport system was one of the most heavily affected, with damages estimated at 77 million Colombian pesos. These damages included broken windows, graffiti, and vandalism at stations such as Museo del Oro, San Diego, and Calle 34. Additionally, four buses were vandalized with paint: two trunk-line buses, one dual-mode, and one zonal.
In total, 41 TransMilenio routes and 148 zonal routes were affected, impacting over 540,000 users (2).
  • Main roads: Protests caused major traffic disruptions. Road closures and gridlocks were reported at key locations such as Calle 26 with Carrera 5, Carrera 7 with Calle 45 and 72, and Avenida Caracas with Calle 76 South (1).

Additional Incidents:

  • Intervention of the Luis Carlos Galán statue: During the protests, the statue of Luis Carlos Galán was intervened by protesters. While some city council members expressed their support for the feminist movement, they condemned the damage to public property and called for the identification of those responsible for the violent acts. The statue, located in the Plaza de Bolívar, was covered with slogans in support of women’s rights and against violence, drawing mixed reactions from political leaders. (3)
  • Vandalism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: In addition to other acts of vandalism, a group of masked women attacked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. They spray-painted slogans on the walls and caused significant damage to the property. The building was surrounded by law enforcement as protesters clashed with the police. Although the majority of the protesters remained peaceful, this group was among the most aggressive during the afternoon. (4)

MEXICO

On March 8, 2025, Mexico City witnessed one of the largest feminist demonstrations in recent history. Over 200,000 women gathered in the city’s center to mark International Women’s Day, demanding justice, gender equality, and an end to domestic violence.

While the Mexico City march was often peaceful, protests in other states escalated, with notable acts of civil unrest: (1)

  • Puebla: Protesters set fire to offices of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Gender Violence Crimes.
  • Guanajuato: Fires broke out at the León Municipal Presidency and State Congress buildings.
  • State of Mexico: Demonstrators attempted to dismantle barricades near the State Attorney General’s Office.
  • Sonora: Protesters set fire to windows of the Federal Judiciary building.

Vandalism of Religious Sites

Several Catholic cathedrals and churches across Mexico were targeted during the marches (2):

Guadalajara, Jalisco:

  • The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Most Holy Mary, located in the heart of Guadalajara, was one of the most prominent religious sites affected. Protesters spray-painted messages on the building’s facade, including “Abort the Church and “The Church is Misogyny”. These slogans are linked to the pro-abortion movement and critiques of the Catholic Church’s stance on women’s rights and reproductive health.
  • Several statues inside and outside the cathedral were defaced, some with red paint resembling blood, symbolizing the movement against femicides and violence against women. This act of vandalism was seen as a direct response to the Church’s influence on politics regarding reproductive rights and women’s autonomy.
  • Public Reaction: The archbishop of Guadalajara, Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega, condemned the acts of violence, calling for peaceful dialogue, while some local residents expressed both support for the protesters’ rights and concern about the desecration of religious sites.

Toluca, State of Mexico:

  • In Toluca, the San José Cathedral was targeted by protesters who draped green cloths, symbolizing the abortion rights movement, over the cathedral gates. In addition, several statues of saints were vandalized with spray paint, leaving them disfigured. One of the most notable damages was to the statue of Saint Joseph, which was completely defaced with red paint.
  • Public Reaction: The local authorities responded by adding extra security to prevent further destruction. While some activists saw the act as a necessary protest against the Church’s political influence, others believed the violence was an unjustified attack on religious freedom. Local religious leaders called for unity and peace despite their disagreement with the protest’s methods.

Cuernavaca, Morelos:

  • At the Cuernavaca Cathedral, protesters attempted to dismantle protective fencing set up around the building. They sprayed several messages, including “The Church is Guilty” and “Feminist Justice”, across the cathedral’s front steps. Though the police intervened quickly, there was some physical altercation between protesters and law enforcement, resulting in minor injuries.
  • Public Reaction: The attack on the cathedral sparked a larger debate in Cuernavaca about whether the destruction of religious property is justified in the fight for women’s rights. Some local Catholic groups expressed outrage, while others remained sympathetic to the protesters’ cause. The national debate intensified, with many questioning how to balance freedom of expression with respect for religious institutions.

Oaxaca City, Oaxaca:

  • In Oaxaca City, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption was heavily targeted during the marches. Protesters sprayed “Church, Stop Abusing Women” and “Feminist Struggle” in large letters on the cathedral’s stone façade. In a more extreme act, several participants attempted to set fire to the cathedral’s wooden doors, though the fire was quickly extinguished by a combination of firemen and volunteers from the community.
  • Several statues inside the cathedral were also vandalized. The most significant damage occurred to the Statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, which had its face covered with a green cloth and was doused in red paint.
  • Public Reaction: Local government officials expressed concern about the escalation of violence in Oaxaca. Religious leaders, including the Bishop of Oaxaca, Pedro Vázquez Villalobos, condemned the act of violence but emphasized the need to understand the frustration driving such extreme actions. There was a strong public outcry from both the Catholic community and the general public, calling for peace and dialogue.

San Luis Potosí:

  • The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Expectation in San Luis Potosí was another religious site that faced significant damage. Protesters spray-painted slogans like “Patriarchy is a Death Sentence” on the cathedral’s main doors. The historic building also suffered from broken windows and other structural damage caused by direct hits from objects thrown by the protesters.
  • Public Reaction: In San Luis Potosí, some residents staged counter-protests, calling for an end to the destruction of religious and public property. Despite these protests, the local police force reported that no arrests were made during the incident. Both the local community and national media have closely followed the controversy surrounding these actions.

PERU

On International Women’s Day 2025, thousands of women took to the streets across Peru, particularly in Lima, to demand gender equality, an end to violence against women, and better working conditions.

Incidents in Lima

  • In downtown Lima, the main protest headed toward Plaza San Martín, a traditional rallying point.
  • The Peruvian National Police (PNP) blocked access to the plaza, sparking tension between demonstrators and officers.
  • When protestors attempted to enter, clashes broke out. The police reportedly used pepper spray and physical force, causing panic and confusion.
  • Some women, including rural and Indigenous activists, were repressed by force, according to images and testimonies circulated online.
  • The plaza’s lights were shut off during the protest, which increased anxiety in the crowd.
  • At least two people were arrested and taken to the Cotabambas police station, according to activist groups.
  • Feminist organizations denounced the excessive use of force and demanded the immediate release of the detained.

Events in Other Cities

  • Demonstrations also occurred in Trujillo, Cusco, Juliaca, Ucayali, Ayacucho, Pucallpa, Acobamba, Tacna, and San Martín.
  • While most of these protests were peaceful, some tensions and confrontations with police were reported in certain areas.
  • In Trujillo, members of the 8 de Marzo feminist collective allegedly burned a symbolic coffin and painted over marble surfaces in the city’s historic Plaza de Armas, sparking concern from local authorities.

Spanish Councilor Carla Toscano Calls Out Feminist Hatred and Lies

https://x.com/eledhmel/status/1838872880890728875

Carla Toscano

Councilor and Assistant Spokesperson

Vox Party, Madrid City Hall

September 24, 2024

Twitter introduction:

Feminism has normalized hatred, the violation of rights, and institutional abuse against men. And this must be denounced. For all good men.

Statement to the Madrid City Council announcing a new initiative, “Elimination of hateful discourse against men, and for the active defense of equality and dignity.”

This Initiative is for all the good men, for all the decent men. Workers who have given everything for their families, who represent the majority of men. For all the men who have lived, who now live, and will live, who face the hell of feminism in their lives.

For all those good men whose lives were normal, with their work, their sorrows, their happiness. Until one day, a woman decided to ruin their life and accuse them of violence.

For all those men who have spent nights in jail, because of a woman in the space of “Equality” at the Madrid City Hall. Those Centers where they tell women that men are oppressing them, that love and marriage oppress them, that tell lies about him in order to destroy him.

Nights in jail because CAPSEM, the Center of the City Hall to Assist Women, issued a report based solely on a woman’s word without any proof, in order that the Community of Madrid would grant her a false accreditation of victimization, with the accompanying financial payments.

For all those good men, because of these false accusations — which are supported by the gender laws — who have lived, now live, and will live, who are vilified and experience incarceration, sleepless nights, severe stress, depression, loss of hair, loss of teeth, thoughts of suicide, loss of their honor and good name, and above all, loss of their children.

For all those men who couldn’t tolerate this any longer, who left us half-way in their lives, and are now looking at us from heaven.

For all these good men, I insist that the majority who are seen as innocent, good fathers, good sons – they are criminalized every day by the institutions. Many times, through hate-filled speech, so normalized that the woman remains free.

And many times, by means of active policies — like the Law of Gender Violence, the Law of Sexual Freedom, the Violet Points, the Municipal Network Against Gender Violence, the municipal campaigns, the Madrid Zero Violence Program — that claim that violence is one-directional, always from the man to the woman.

Policies that also presume a business that moves millions, that impose a false narrative on the collective conscious, that the man is always the aggressor.

I wish I could erase all the pain, all the injustice. I wish I could erase every lie, every tear. But we cannot.

What we can do is raise our voices to defend them. What you can do, as persons who govern, is to return their dignity to all the men in Madrid and in Spain. To those who treat them by law in an unequal way, those who have stolen so many of their rights, even regarding their children.

You can eliminate all hateful speech, you can visualize their suffering and their pain. When they are murdered by their wives, give them the minute of silence that you are currently denying them. You can and should return to them the presumption of innocence, their honor, and their decency.

This Initiative is not for the aggressors – for them, jail and stronger punishments.

This Initiative is for all the good men, like Jesús, Rafa, Carlos, Pablo, Carliños, Miguel Angel. So some day they can live in peace and equality, recovering their pride as persons, recovering the love of their children, and recovering the respect that society owes them, which never should have been taken from them.

Moms Who Kill Their Kids

SAVE

February 28, 2024

SAVE has previously reported on mothers who attacked other women to steal their unborn babies. A more widespread problem is mothers who kill their children. Globally, 72% of infant murders are by their mothers.

Many of these cases occur in the middle of a custody dispute. These women apparently believed they “own” their children. These six cases, all in the United States, were reported in February, 2024:

1. Mom in custody battle kills four kids and herself in house fire, Missouri reports say

Pruessner was reportedly involved in court battles with the two fathers of her four children. Mom burned her kids to death rather than share custody with the father.  She was a college professor.

January 10, 2024

There is no crime more brutal, more sinister, or more incomprehensible than a female who kills a pregnant woman with the intention of stealing the unborn baby from the dead mother’s womb. But these crimes continue to happen with disturbing regularity.

These are six incidents from the last two years:

https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/04/us/heidi-broussard-murder-fieramusca-guilty-plea/index.html

While these cases are fortunately rare, their incidence seems to be increasing. According to a 2021 study, there were 15 such cases reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the 24-year period from 1987 to 2011.

However, a 2017 article, “10 Horrifying Cases Of Fetal Abduction,” identified eight examples in the United States and South Africa between 2009 and 2017.

Internationally, mothers commit 72% of all infant murders. Despite these grisly facts, groups such as the United Nations continue to white-wash female-perpetrated violence.

HOAX: White House Claim of a ‘Surge’ of ‘Hate-Fueled Violence’ Against Transgenders is Total Inversion of the Truth

PRESS RELEASE

HOAX: White House Claim of a ‘Surge’ of ‘Hate-Fueled Violence’ Against Transgenders is Total Inversion of the Truth

June 19, 2023 – The White House announced a new initiative on June 8 to counter a purported “surge” of “hate-fueled violence” against the LGBTQI+ community (1). But a review of evidence from the Department of Homeland Security and the Human Rights Campaign reveals no evidence of any “surge” of violence against transgender persons.

Department of Homeland Security: The White House “FACT SHEET” links to the Department of Homeland Security’s Summary of Terrorism-Related Threat to the United States (2). The DHS Summary lists four “terrorism-related” incidents that occurred in 2023.

One incident was the March shooting by transgender Audrey Hale of three students and staff members in Nashville (3). The other incident involved the burning of an Ohio church that was planning to hold a drag-themed event (4).

The two other incidents listed by DHS had no connection to LGBTQI+ issues (5,6).

Human Rights Campaign: The Human Rights Campaign tracks homicides of transgendered and nonbinary persons. Thus far in 2023, the HRC lists 12 homicides of these persons. A review of these cases provides no evidence of a “surge” of violence, or that the murders were “hate-fueled.” Indeed, the HRC reveals, “Most of these victims were killed by partners and acquaintances.” (7)

Real Surge of Violence: A surge of transgender-related violence has occurred in recent months. In contrast to the White House claim, the attacks have been perpetrated by transgender activists. SAVE has documented 20 such cases thus far in 2023. The incidents involved murders, bomb threats, and other assaults against parents, children, law enforcement, and others (8).

The most recent incident, reported on June 14, was the life sentence handed down to Dana Rivers, a prominent trans rights activist, for Rivers’ triple homicide of a lesbian couple and their son. Alameda County Judge Scott Patton described the bloody attack as “The most depraved crime that I’ve ever handled.” (9)

Overall, a detailed review of the cases listed by the Department of Homeland Security and the Human Rights Campaign identifies only one incident that could be classified as “hate-fueled” — the Ohio church conflagration. A single incident does not qualify as a “surge.”

In contrast, SAVE identified three incidents of violence by transgender persons in 2022, and 20 such cases thus far in 2023. This six-fold increase in a single year clearly represents a “surge” of violence committed by transgender individuals.

The claim of a “surge” of “hate-fueled” violence against the LGBTQI+ community is a categorical inversion of the truth.

SAVE urges persons to contact the White House and tell them to retract its dishonest “FACT SHEET” about transgender violence. Telephone: 202-456-1111.  Email: comments@whitehouse.gov

Following Wave of Violent Incidents by Transgender Activists, 72 Organizations and 34 State Lawmakers Call on DOE to Abandon Title IX Plan

Following Wave of Violent Incidents by Transgender Activists, 72 Organizations and 34 State Lawmakers Call on DOE to Abandon Title IX Plan

May 10, 2023 – In a coalition letter sent today to Dr. Miguel Cardona, Secretary of the Department of Education, 72 organizations and 34 state lawmakers, have expressed their deep concerns with the upswing in incidents of violence by transgender activists.

On June 23, 2022 the U.S. Department of Education issued a draft Title IX regulation that redefines “sex” to include “gender identity.” (1) This proposal served to activate and embolden the transgender rights movement, leading to a growing number of violent incidents around the country. Following are examples of such incidents in recent weeks:

  1. April 6, San Francisco, CA: Following a speech by former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, a group of activists began to chant, “Trans rights are human rights.” They chased Gaines down a hallway, hitting her on the head, and forcing her to seek safety in a room. To secure her release, the activists demanded that Riley pay each of them a $10 “ransom.” (2)
  2. April 23, Ft. Worth, TX: Three Antifa members were arrested on multiple charges, including assault of a police officer. They were arrested after attacking a peaceful protest outside a local restaurant where a drag queen show was taking place. Two out of the three Antifa members were transgender (3).
  3. May 8, Kent, OH: Kent State College Republicans announced it would be holding a screening of the film, “What is a Woman?” In response, transgender activists made veiled threats, saying that they were undeterred by police investigations. The dispute culminated in a confrontation in which an activist forcibly tore a sign from the hands of a KSCR member (4).

A complete list of Incidents can be seen online (5).

The 72 organizations and 34 state lawmakers who signed the coalition letter urge the Department of Education to immediately abandon its plan to release a new Title IX regulation. Today’s letter to the Department of Education is available online (6).

All 72 organizations are members of the Title IX Network, the umbrella group that is leading the national effort to stop the Department of Education’s Title IX plan (7).

Police Must Act Now to Stop Growing Wave of Violence by Transgender Activists

PRESS RELEASE

Rebecca Hain: 513-479-3335

Email: info@saveservices.org

Police Must Act Now to Stop Growing Wave of Violence by Transgender Activists

WASHINGTON / April 20, 2023 – Last June the Department of Education issued a proposal to expand the definition of “sex” to include “gender identity” (1), a move that served to strengthen and embolden the transgender rights movement. That same month, the Trans Resistance Network began to tweet a series of inflammatory messages, for example making the claim that “Disarming trans people is a preparation for genocide.” (2)

Not surprisingly, a growing number of incidents of harassment and free speech violations by transgender activists were seen during subsequent months. On March 9, for example, a group of activists at Stanford University repeatedly interrupted the comments of Judge Stuart Duncan, forcing him to curtail his presentation. Previously, Duncan had denied the request of Norman Varner, convicted of child exploitation, to change his sex and be referred to by a female name (3).

Some of these incidents escalated into credible threats of violence, or actual violence.

Best known is the shooting of three staff members and three students at Covenant School in Nashville on March 27. The shooter, Audrey Hale, self-identified as transgender (4).

The Nashville tragedy is one of numerous other violent incidents in the past six months. This number has escalated dramatically since early March:

  1. October 26, 2022, Tacoma, WA

The most recent April 6 incident followed a talk by NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, where she was chased down a hallway, repeatedly hit on the head, and forced to seek safety in a classroom for three hours (5).

In some cases, law enforcement took little action to halt the violence. SAVE calls on law enforcement and campus security personnel to act decisively to stop the wave of violence by transgender activists. SAVE also calls on lawmakers to support these efforts.

More information about these incidents is available on the SAVE website (6).

A comprehensive review of child homicides around the world reached this conclusion:

“The 12 countries with detailed data on parent as perpetrators showed mothers commit the majority of parental homicides of children under 1 year (71.7% (IQR: 50.2–75.7)).”

To illustrate the extent of the problem, below are the results of a Google search that looked for news stories about American mothers who killed their children in the last 12 months:

Anti-Violence Bill Loses Focus on Victims, Many Claim

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 — A growing number of groups, including Stop Abusive and Violent Environments, are criticizing the proposed reauthorization bill of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) for losing sight of the law’s original intended purpose: to help victims of domestic violence. These concerns were highlighted during the recent February 2 meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Concerned Women for America, the largest women’s organization in the country, noted in a February 1 group letter that the Leahy-Crapo bill will “actually squander the resources for victims of actual violence by failing to properly prioritize and assess victims.”

Victim-advocacy group Survivors in Action decries what it calls the “DV run-around” in which victims are shunted from hotlines to shelters to social service agencies, never receiving the services they need.

Sen. Charles Grassley, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, deplored the fact that VAWA bill S. 1925 “creates so many new programs for underserved populations that it risks losing the focus on helping victims.” (1)

Even Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy acknowledged criticism that the VAWA bill is “trying to protect too many victims.” Following debate, Sen. Leahy’s proposed bill was approved by a slim 10-8 margin and was forwarded to the full Senate for consideration.

Vague and over-broad definitions of abuse found in the current law undermine key Constitutional protections for the accused, as well: http://www.saveservices.org/wp-content/uploads/SAVE-Assault-Civil-Rights.pdf

“If we want to stop the cycle of violence and help real victims, the Violence Against Women Act must rein in sweeping definitions, improve accountability, and recognize that women are as likely as men to be physically abusive with their partners,” explains SAVE spokesman Philip W. Cook.

Stop Abusive and Violent Environments is proposing consideration of the Partner Violence Reduction Act (2), which accords priority to persons with evidence of physical violence.

Congressman Ted Poe, co-chair of the Victim’s Rights Caucus, has suggested changing the name of VAWA to the Domestic Violence Act, in order to recognize that partner abuse affects members of both sexes (3).

UNC Wants SCOTUS to Review Ruling Mandating Release of Sexual Assault Sanctions

Updated August 8, 2020

 — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill intends to ask the United States Supreme Court to review a 4-3 decision by the Supreme Court of North Carolina that ordered the school to release the names of students found responsible and sanctioned for sexual misconduct.

After a nearly four-year legal fight, UNC released a list of 15 names in response to a request for all sanctions issued for sexual misconduct since 2007.

The release of the records comes three months after the state Supreme Court sided with a coalition of North Carolina media organizations that sued the university after it denied a 2016 public records request for the information. The coalition includes Capitol Broadcasting Co., WRAL’s parent company, as well as UNC-Chapel Hill’s student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel.

“We, along with many advocates for  survivors  of sexual assault and interpersonal violence, still believe the release of these records will inevitably lead to an increased risk of the identification of  survivors  and key witnesses and  could discourage others from participating in the Title IX process,” said Joel Curran, vice chancellor of University Communications.

“Universities should not be forced to release student records that could identify sexual assault  survivors,” Curran said.

Annie Clark, a former student who has spent seven years advocating for more transparency about sexual assaults on campus, says the release of the names is a step in the right direction.

“We have a lot of survivor advocates and survivors themselves who want these names released, who want to have that vindication,” Clark said. “But you also have a lot of folks who don’t want that, who feel like, if their perpetrator’s or alleged perpetrator’s name is released, that it puts them in danger.”

Clark was one of five women who filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education in 2013 accusing UNC-Chapel Hill of underreporting sexual assault cases for 2010 in an annual report to the federal government on campus crime. It also alleged that campus officials allowed a hostile environment for students reporting sexual assault.

“It is very surprising that, over the course of years, that there are only 15 people who have been found responsible that the university released,” Clark said. “What we know is that one in four or one in five women, depending on the statistics used, are sexually assaulted before they graduate, drop out or leave college in another way.”

Clark wants UNC-Chapel Hill and other universities to release even more information, including how many total assaults are reported, how many are investigated and how many result in sanctions.

“There is a lot further to go,” she said. “I think we need to look beyond this one story of releasing names and look more towards why are people still doing, why are people are still getting away with and where are those aggregate numbers and where are people falling through the cracks.”

On UNC-Chapel Hill’s website for its Equal Opportunity Compliance office, sexual assault victims are encouraged to report criminal activity to law enforcement; however, accusers can choose to pursue a case through a university process that’s been kept completely confidential.

As for its internal process, Curran said, “The University’s Title IX policy and process are mandated by the federal government and are separate and distinct from any criminal process.”

“Sanctions are tailored to the unique facts and circumstances of each report, and the University’s Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office investigators and hearing panelists consider a variety of factors when determining the appropriate sanction,” said Leslie Minton, associate director of media relations. “Those factors are listed in the procedures associated with the Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct. This is an educational process focused on maximizing equal access to educational programs and activities and the safety and well-being of our students and campus community.

WRAL News has a team of reporters gathering more information on the students named and intends to share more information.
