Paternity Fraud is Serious and Widespread, But Incidents May Go Unpunished

Paternity Fraud is Serious and Widespread, But Incidents May Go Unpunished

SAVE

May 15, 2025

The problem of paternity fraud has been recognized for many years. Paternity fraud is believed to be widespread, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. Adverse mental health consequences often follow when a person discovers their true parentage. In addition, the seriousness of the problem will increase in the future as customized medical therapies become more widespread. (These are therapies that are tailored to the unique genetics of a particular patient.)

One unfortunate recent development is the growing brazenness of fraudsters. In the past, the fraud was usually “just” a lie. In recent years, however, we are seeing some women go to extreme lengths to perpetrate paternity fraud, including forging documents and pictures.

Given the seriousness of the problem, states should take action to protect all parties involved, both the defrauded, falsely-identified male, as well as the children. States already have testing requirements in which newborns are tested for a variety of medical conditions. It would be easy to add a DNA test to the battery of tests that are already being run.

Lawyers should also consider adding language to premarital agreements that states DNA tests will be performed on every child of the marriage.

Scope of the Problem

The exact scope of the problem remains unknown, perhaps because certain constituencies are trying to minimize or even suppress information about the problem. However, the information that has been reported suggests the problem is widespread. According to one article, “[a]t 23andMe, those types of calls [about paternity surprises] are so frequent that preparing for them is integrated into the company’s months-long training program.”

Following are two articles about the prevalence of paternity fraud:

  1. Paternity fraud is ‘like a Pandora’s box’ and ‘one of society’s last taboo subjects’

Campaigners say the true rate of paternity fraud – the intentional misidentification of a child’s biological father – remains unknown

Mirror, April 8, 2025

https://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/family/paternity-fraud-statistics-uk-dads-35002112

Statistics on the percentage of men affected by paternity fraud in the UK vary dramatically according to different studies. Figures vary, with a 2018 study from the University of Warwick estimating 3% and a 2021 study from the University of Oxford suggesting 1%.

Conversely, in one striking study by DNA Clinics, a subsidiary of the BioClinics Group in Salford, looking at 5,000 results randomly selected from January 2014 to June 2016, found that a staggering 48% of the men tested were not the biological father.

2. Mommy’s Little Secret

The Globe and Mail, December 14, 2002

https://canadiancrc.com/newspaper_articles/Globe_and_Mail_Moms_Little_secret_14DEC02.aspx

Some peg the range at 5 to 10 per cent; others, such as Jeanette Papp of the University of California at Los Angeles, feel that 15 per cent is reasonable for the Western world, even if there is no hard evidence. “It’s hard to do studies on these things for ethical reasons,” says Dr. Papp, director of genotyping and sequencing in UCLA’s department of human genetics. “I mean, how do you tell people what you’re really looking for?”

A British survey conducted between 1988 and 1996 by Robin Baker, a former professor at the University of Manchester, confirmed the 10-per-cent figure. That seems high to skeptics such as Dalhousie University geneticist Paul Neumann, although even he admitted that “my colleague, who’s a woman, tells me women have no trouble believing it. . . . It’s the men who can’t.”

Bernard Dickens, a specialist in health law and policy at the University of Toronto, said that in another British example, the non-paternity rate was three times that.

In the early 1970s, a schoolteacher in southern England assigned a class science project in which his students were to find out the blood types of their parents. The students were then to use this information to deduce their own blood types (because a gene from each parent determines your blood type, in most instances only a certain number of combinations are possible). Instead, 30 per cent of the students discovered their dads were not their biologically fathers.

Mental Health Effects

These five articles document the severe mental health consequences of paternity fraud:

  1. When a DNA Test Shatters Your Identity

“Each person comes into our group thinking they are a freak.”

The Atlantic, July 17, 2018

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/07/dna-test-misattributed-paternity/562928/

2. Surprise DNA Results Are Turning Customer Service Reps Into Therapists

Bloomberg, December 19, 2018

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-12-19/surprise-dna-results-are-turning-customer-service-reps-into-therapists

At 23andMe, those types of calls are so frequent that preparing for them is integrated into the company’s months-long training program. The most common issue, said Hillyer, is when a customer’s presumed father doesn’t show up on a test as the genetic dad. But sometimes mothers or siblings are a surprise, too.

3. After A DNA Surprise: 10 Things No One Wants to Hear

Mind-blowing DNA revelations are becoming so common that some DNA testing companies have trained their customer service staff representatives to respond empathetically.

4. Home DNA tests can lead to shock and trauma, but mental health resources are scarce

1 in 5 Americans has spit in a tube and learned that their ancestors hailed from Greece or they have a cousin in Texas. But DNA tests can also dig up family secrets, such as an affair or insemination.

5. Discovering your presumed father is not your biological father: Psychiatric ramifications of independently uncovered non-paternity events resulting from direct-to-consumer DNA testing

Psychiatry Research, May 2023

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165178123000938

Direct-to-consumer DNA tests provide information on ancestry and family relations. Their increased use in recent years has led many to discover that their presumed father is not their biological father, a non-paternity event (NPE). We aimed to explore and quantify the psychiatric effects of discovering one’s father’s identity was misattributed. We distributed questionnaires in a private online community of individuals who learned they were NPEs.

Questionnaires included clinical scales assessing depressive, anxiety, and panic symptomatology as well as background and personal details regarding participants’ NPE discovery and demography. A total of 731 people participated.

Results demonstrated increased levels of depression, anxiety, and panic symptoms relative to controls. Multiple factors influenced such effects, including demographics, background information, family members’ reactions, and personal reactions. We identified a worsening relationship or attitude toward the mother as a risk factor for worse mental health. The ability to openly discuss the discovery and acceptance of it were identified as protective factors.

This is the first paper to explore the psychiatric sequelae of discovering misattributed paternity in a large cohort. This unique psychosocial stressor is likely to become more common as direct-to-consumer DNA tests gain popularity, requiring the attention of mental health professionals.

Legal Consequences

Recent accounts reveal that women who engage in paternity fraud may escape meaningful legal consequences:

  1. Woman indicted for fraud, other charges after accusing former ‘Bachelor’ star of getting her pregnant

12 News, May 6, 2025

https://www.12news.com/article/news/crime/laura-owens-indicted-fraud-for-falsely-accusing-clayton-echard-of-getting-her-pregnant/75-aca0b67d-971f-4034-ad6e-1cef70a67155

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that a grand jury has indicted a woman who a judge said falsely accused a former star of “The Bachelor” of getting her pregnant with twins.

Laura Owens sought a paternity case against Scottsdale resident and former “Bachelor” star Clayton Echard in July 2024. Echard categorically denied the allegations and stated the two never had sexual intercourse. Owens later claimed she had a miscarriage but a family court judge ruled her claim was false and referred Owens’ actions to the county attorney’s office for review.

Maricopa County Attorney’s Office investigators said Owens altered an ultrasound image, fabricated a pregnancy video and lied multiple times under oath about the pregnancy. She’s been charged with one count of fraudulent schemes, one count of forgery, four counts of perjury and one count of tampering with physical evidence.

Judge Julie Mata was the family court judge who presided over the hearings regarding the original paternity claim. Mata issued an unprecedented 19-page ruling after the case, determining Owens knowingly presented a false claim. She also wrote that Owens has a pattern of similar, if not identical, behavior.

Echard previously told 12News he has gotten to know some of the other men Owens has allegedly accused of impregnating her.

2. Mother, 26, who tricked ex-boyfriend into believing he was the father of her child by forging paternity test results avoids prison

Daily Mail, April 15, 2025

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14614589/Mother-ex-boyfriend-father-child-paternity-test-prison.html

A 26-year-old mother who forged paternity test results and lied to her ex-partner about him being her child’s father has avoided prison.

In April 2019, Beth Fernley told Ryan Hampson she was pregnant and was unsure about who the baby’s father was, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

On Tuesday, Gareth Roberts, prosecuting, told the court that Fernley had asked Mr Hampson for £300 towards a DNA test.

After this, she sent him screenshots which she claimed were from company EasyDNA and showed there was a 99.9% probability he was the father.

Mr. Hampson purchased items for the unborn baby and resumed a relationship with Fernley, who he had been with for four years before they broke up in early 2019, the prosecution said.

He was at the baby’s birth, named on the birth certificate and purchased a house with Fernley in 2020.

The 26-year-old later forged another letter which claimed the company had made a mistake and he was not the father, the court heard.

But when Mr Hampson contacted the firm he was told they had no record of the tests.

3. After Ancestry.com Raises Paternity Questions, Pa. Appeals Court Orders Genetic Testing in Child Support Fraud Claim

“We hold that to apply the doctrine of paternity by estoppel under the circumstances of this case would punish appellant, who ‘sought to do what was righteous’ by assuming parental duty of child, and reward mother, who might be guilty of perpetrating a fraud,” King said.

Rep. Ilhan Omar Needs to Apologize for Falsehoods About Men

Rep. Ilhan Omar Needs to Apologize for Falsehoods About Men

May 7, 2025 / WASHINGTON – Democratic lawmaker Ilhan Omar has claimed, “We should be monitoring, profiling, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.” (1) Omar made her statement under the pretext that white men are causing a disproportionate share of deaths, a claim that FBI homicide data quickly dispel (2).

And opinion polls reveal that young women — not men — have become radicalized in their political views, embracing a variety of extreme political positions. In contrast, young men have moved slightly to the right in recent years (3).

Omar’s statement is the latest example of claims made by progressive politicians that are not only false, but represent the exact opposite of the truth:

Misogyny vs. Misandry: During the recent presidential campaign, Michelle Obama and other Democrats berated men for their alleged “misogyny” towards women (4). Truth: Anti-male misandry is far more widespread than anti-female misogyny. A recent analysis found that “calls to ‘kill all men’ have become a staple of feminist advocacy.” (5)

Patriarchy: Democrats often allude to the existence of an oppressive “patriarchy” that seeks to eliminate the rights of women. Truth: In 2025, there is no such thing as a “patriarchy.” To the contrary, chivalrous male lawmakers often enact laws that favor women over men, such as the 1994 Violence Against Women Act. The 2010 Affordable Care Act mandates that health insurance plans cover female-specific services like mammograms and cervical cancer screenings. But the ACA does not require any sex-specific services for men, such as prostate cancer screening.

Domestic Violence: Democrats often make statements about male-perpetrated domestic violence, making no mention of the greater problem of female-perpetrated abuse of men. Truth: The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control shows that each year, there are 6.5 million male victims and 5.6 million female victims of physical domestic violence (6).

Columnist Wendy McElroy has characterized young male voters as the “new power demographic.” (7) Indeed, exit polls from the November 5 presidential election confirmed that majorities of married men, men with children, White men, and Latino men pulled the lever in favor of Donald Trump (8).

Afterwards, Democratic governors Wes Moore of Maryland, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Ned Lamont of Connecticut began to make good-faith efforts to reach out and address the broad range of male disadvantage (9).

Unless Democrats wish to continue their spell in the political wilderness, they will need to stop promoting unfair stereotypes of men. And Rep. Omar needs to apologize for her extreme proposal to start “monitoring, profiling, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.”

SAVE – Stop Abusive and Violent Environments – is a 501(c)3 organization working to assure due process, fairness, and equal opportunities for men.

Feminist Violence on International Women’s Day in Latin America

SAVE

May 2, 2025

International Women’s Day (IWD) originally was designed to commemorate the progress in assuring gender equality for women. In recent years, however, IWD increasingly has been marked by acts of destruction of property, confrontations with the police, and violence. Following are accounts from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru of the IWD events held on March 8, 2025.

ARGENTINA

During the International Women’s Day marches in Argentina, particularly in Buenos Aires, there were reports of confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. Some demonstrators attempted to breach security barriers near the Casa Rosada, leading to police responses involving tear gas and rubber bullets. These actions resulted in multiple injuries and detentions.

In Córdoba, similar incidents occurred when protesters clashed with police forces, leading to several arrests. (1)

Destruction of Public Property

There were multiple instances of damage of public property : (2)

  • Buenos Aires: Monuments, public furniture, and transportation stations were damaged.
  • Mendoza: Protesters set fire to garbage containers and broke windows of government buildings.
  • Rosario: Looting of shops and destruction in public areas were reported.

Nearly 300 Federal Police officers were deployed around the protest, which many protestors interpreted as an act of intimidation and repression. (3)

CHILE

On March 8, 2025, Chile witnessed significant unrest during International Women’s Day, particularly in the capitol city Santiago, where peaceful demonstrations escalated into violent confrontations.

Santiago

After the conclusion of the 8M march in Santiago, groups of masked individuals ignited barricades along the Alameda, between Lord Cochrane and Los Héroes. These individuals threw objects at Carabineros (Chilean police), prompting the use of water cannons to disperse the crowd. The situation disrupted traffic and public transportation in the city center. (1)

Police actions:

Chile’s national police, the Carabineros, implemented a security operation during the event. According to Colonel Estrella Sotelo, 13 people were detained: six due to outstanding arrest warrants, one for drug dealing, one for concealing identity and carrying a bladed weapon, and three for public disorder. One woman was injured by glass from a thrown bottle and was taken to the Ex Posta Central hospital.

Vesna Madariaga, spokesperson for Coordinadora 8M, explained the rationale for the demonstration, saying, “We gather to defend our rights.” Earlier that day, President Gabriel Boric and Minister for Women and Gender Equality Antonia Orellana led a commemorative event in Quinta Normal, featuring a performance by singer Myriam Hernández. COLOMBIA

What began as a peaceful demonstration to commemorate International Women’s Day in Bogotá, escalated into violent incidents and acts of vandalism in several parts of the city (1).

 Timeline of Events

  • Start of the march: The main protest began around 3:00 p.m. at the mural “Las cuchas tienen razón” (Calle 45 with Carrera 7), and proceeded toward the Plaza of the Bogotá City Council.
  • Peaceful development: For several hours, the march remained peaceful, with thousands of women chanting slogans and carrying banners in defense of women’s rights.
  • Escalation of violence: Around 6:00 p.m., reports emerged of vandalism in various areas of the city. Groups of masked individuals damaged businesses and public infrastructure.

Infrastructure Damage and Mobility Disruptions

  • TransMilenio: The TransMilenio public transport system was one of the most heavily affected, with damages estimated at 77 million Colombian pesos. These damages included broken windows, graffiti, and vandalism at stations such as Museo del Oro, San Diego, and Calle 34. Additionally, four buses were vandalized with paint: two trunk-line buses, one dual-mode, and one zonal.
In total, 41 TransMilenio routes and 148 zonal routes were affected, impacting over 540,000 users (2).
  • Main roads: Protests caused major traffic disruptions. Road closures and gridlocks were reported at key locations such as Calle 26 with Carrera 5, Carrera 7 with Calle 45 and 72, and Avenida Caracas with Calle 76 South (1).

Additional Incidents:

  • Intervention of the Luis Carlos Galán statue: During the protests, the statue of Luis Carlos Galán was intervened by protesters. While some city council members expressed their support for the feminist movement, they condemned the damage to public property and called for the identification of those responsible for the violent acts. The statue, located in the Plaza de Bolívar, was covered with slogans in support of women’s rights and against violence, drawing mixed reactions from political leaders. (3)
  • Vandalism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: In addition to other acts of vandalism, a group of masked women attacked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. They spray-painted slogans on the walls and caused significant damage to the property. The building was surrounded by law enforcement as protesters clashed with the police. Although the majority of the protesters remained peaceful, this group was among the most aggressive during the afternoon. (4)

MEXICO

On March 8, 2025, Mexico City witnessed one of the largest feminist demonstrations in recent history. Over 200,000 women gathered in the city’s center to mark International Women’s Day, demanding justice, gender equality, and an end to domestic violence.

While the Mexico City march was often peaceful, protests in other states escalated, with notable acts of civil unrest: (1)

  • Puebla: Protesters set fire to offices of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Gender Violence Crimes.
  • Guanajuato: Fires broke out at the León Municipal Presidency and State Congress buildings.
  • State of Mexico: Demonstrators attempted to dismantle barricades near the State Attorney General’s Office.
  • Sonora: Protesters set fire to windows of the Federal Judiciary building.

Vandalism of Religious Sites

Several Catholic cathedrals and churches across Mexico were targeted during the marches (2):

Guadalajara, Jalisco:

  • The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Most Holy Mary, located in the heart of Guadalajara, was one of the most prominent religious sites affected. Protesters spray-painted messages on the building’s facade, including “Abort the Church and “The Church is Misogyny”. These slogans are linked to the pro-abortion movement and critiques of the Catholic Church’s stance on women’s rights and reproductive health.
  • Several statues inside and outside the cathedral were defaced, some with red paint resembling blood, symbolizing the movement against femicides and violence against women. This act of vandalism was seen as a direct response to the Church’s influence on politics regarding reproductive rights and women’s autonomy.
  • Public Reaction: The archbishop of Guadalajara, Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega, condemned the acts of violence, calling for peaceful dialogue, while some local residents expressed both support for the protesters’ rights and concern about the desecration of religious sites.

Toluca, State of Mexico:

  • In Toluca, the San José Cathedral was targeted by protesters who draped green cloths, symbolizing the abortion rights movement, over the cathedral gates. In addition, several statues of saints were vandalized with spray paint, leaving them disfigured. One of the most notable damages was to the statue of Saint Joseph, which was completely defaced with red paint.
  • Public Reaction: The local authorities responded by adding extra security to prevent further destruction. While some activists saw the act as a necessary protest against the Church’s political influence, others believed the violence was an unjustified attack on religious freedom. Local religious leaders called for unity and peace despite their disagreement with the protest’s methods.

Cuernavaca, Morelos:

  • At the Cuernavaca Cathedral, protesters attempted to dismantle protective fencing set up around the building. They sprayed several messages, including “The Church is Guilty” and “Feminist Justice”, across the cathedral’s front steps. Though the police intervened quickly, there was some physical altercation between protesters and law enforcement, resulting in minor injuries.
  • Public Reaction: The attack on the cathedral sparked a larger debate in Cuernavaca about whether the destruction of religious property is justified in the fight for women’s rights. Some local Catholic groups expressed outrage, while others remained sympathetic to the protesters’ cause. The national debate intensified, with many questioning how to balance freedom of expression with respect for religious institutions.

Oaxaca City, Oaxaca:

  • In Oaxaca City, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption was heavily targeted during the marches. Protesters sprayed “Church, Stop Abusing Women” and “Feminist Struggle” in large letters on the cathedral’s stone façade. In a more extreme act, several participants attempted to set fire to the cathedral’s wooden doors, though the fire was quickly extinguished by a combination of firemen and volunteers from the community.
  • Several statues inside the cathedral were also vandalized. The most significant damage occurred to the Statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, which had its face covered with a green cloth and was doused in red paint.
  • Public Reaction: Local government officials expressed concern about the escalation of violence in Oaxaca. Religious leaders, including the Bishop of Oaxaca, Pedro Vázquez Villalobos, condemned the act of violence but emphasized the need to understand the frustration driving such extreme actions. There was a strong public outcry from both the Catholic community and the general public, calling for peace and dialogue.

San Luis Potosí:

  • The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Expectation in San Luis Potosí was another religious site that faced significant damage. Protesters spray-painted slogans like “Patriarchy is a Death Sentence” on the cathedral’s main doors. The historic building also suffered from broken windows and other structural damage caused by direct hits from objects thrown by the protesters.
  • Public Reaction: In San Luis Potosí, some residents staged counter-protests, calling for an end to the destruction of religious and public property. Despite these protests, the local police force reported that no arrests were made during the incident. Both the local community and national media have closely followed the controversy surrounding these actions.

PERU

On International Women’s Day 2025, thousands of women took to the streets across Peru, particularly in Lima, to demand gender equality, an end to violence against women, and better working conditions.

Incidents in Lima

  • In downtown Lima, the main protest headed toward Plaza San Martín, a traditional rallying point.
  • The Peruvian National Police (PNP) blocked access to the plaza, sparking tension between demonstrators and officers.
  • When protestors attempted to enter, clashes broke out. The police reportedly used pepper spray and physical force, causing panic and confusion.
  • Some women, including rural and Indigenous activists, were repressed by force, according to images and testimonies circulated online.
  • The plaza’s lights were shut off during the protest, which increased anxiety in the crowd.
  • At least two people were arrested and taken to the Cotabambas police station, according to activist groups.
