The Lives of Men Hang in the Balance

October 20, 2026 – American men die an average of 5 years earlier than women. The annual toll of premature male mortality is staggering in its direct impact on men, as well as its indirect effects on women and children:

  • 700,000–800,000 women become widows each year following the death of their husbands (1), This places the women at elevated risk of poverty (2), three times greater risk of being placed in a nursing home (3), and a 48% greater risk of widowhood mortality (4).
  • About 300,000 children annually lose their father due to premature male mortality (5), resulting in an array of educational, economic, and behavioral problems (6).

A large part of the reason for the lifespan gender gap lies in the fact that the US Department of Health and Human Services has largely ignored men’s health. This means that services are not available to help emotionally distressed men avoid suicide, to offer smoking cessation programs to men who are susceptible to heart disease, or to inspect work sites to assure men are not exposed to needless workplace risks.

The lack of programs geared to help men is largely due to the fact that DHHS currently has 7 offices of women’s health, and ZERO offices of men’s health.

To correct this deficiency, the State of Men’s Health Act has been introduced in both the Senate and House, which aims to establish the first-ever Office of Men’s Health. (7)

But efforts to create the Office of Men’s Health have encountered a formidable obstacle: Feminist activists who don’t want their seven offices of women’s health to face any competition.

So the Gender Warriors fabricated a myth – the claim that women’s health has been ignored over the years. For example, Melinda French Gates recently insisted, “We have funded men’s health issues for a very long time, but we have under-funded and under-researched conditions that affect women.” (8)

Nothing could be farther from the truth:

  • An analysis of clinical trials and epidemiological studies from 1966 to 1990 found more women than men had been research participants. (9)
  • From 2005–2022, the National Institutes of Health invested an average of $4.1 billion per year in women’s health research, versus $1.8 billion per year in men’s health research — more than twice as much for women. (10)
  • The federal General Accountability Office concluded, “GAO found that women were a majority of the clinical trial participants in the new drug applications (NDA) it examined.” (11)

Flatly ignoring these and other studies, yesterday, October 19, President Donald Trump signed an order, backed by first lady Melania Trump, aimed at dramatically boosting women’s health research. (12)

During the White House signing ceremonies, there was no mention of the pervasive societal effects of premature male mortality, the absence of even a single office of men’s health, or the chronic under-funding of men’s health research.

This was all about election year politics.
