Domestic Violence: Understand the Truth, Stop the Abuse
Domestic Violence Awareness Month affords a wealth of opportunities to raise public awareness about the problem of partner abuse and spotlight the efforts of domestic violence service providers to stop the abuse.
In 2010 the theme is “Domestic Violence: Understand the Truth, Stop the Abuse.” This theme was chosen because once the public understands the extent and nature of abuse, we will be that much closer to stopping it!
These are just a few ways you and your agency can participate in Domestic Violence Awareness Month:
- Set up a display at a community fair or a local library
- Do a presentation at a local school, police department, church or synagogue, or community college
- Write an editorial or letter-to-the-editor for your local newspaper
- Recommend an interview for a local radio show
To assist with these activities, Stop Abusive and Violent Environments has developed a Fact Sheet, “Seven Key Facts About Domestic Violence”. The Fact Sheet can be used as an outline for an in-service class, a community presentation, or simply posted on bulletin boards.
In addition, if you want to network with domestic violence service providers from around the country, you can sign up for our Yahoo discussion group. The group wants to hear about your ideas and plans for Domestic Violence Awareness Month!
