Followup
Candidate Follow-up
If the candidate gives a good response to your question, be sure to follow-up. After the event, approach the candidate or staff member and suggest a follow-up meeting.
In preparation, review SAVE Special Reports and other materials so you are knowledgeable about the issues. Visit the candidate’s website to learn about areas of common interest. Invite one or two other persons to join you.
At the meeting, review the flyer outlining the key points. Emphasize how victims of physical violence are often being shortchanged by current policies. Engage in a constructive dialogue to identify solutions. Speak from the heart, but don’t focus on your individual case. Keep the discussion focused on the domestic violence issue.
At the end, ask how supportive the candidate is to work for the changes you discussed. SAVE evaluates each candidate’s interest level from 1 to 5:
- Openly hostile
- Skeptical
- Neutral, non-committal
- Sympathetic
- Indicates is willing to help
Consider volunteering for the candidate’s campaign. Afterwards, let others on the Yahoo group know how it went, and send a quick summary to campaign2012@saveservices.org .
