Woman charged with falsely accusing man of assault

A Granville woman was charged with two misdemeanors Sunday for allegedly faking injuries to accuse a man of harming her, officials said.
Melissa M. Van Guilder, 35, of Fox Road was charged with falsely reporting an incident and offering a false instrument for filing, both misdemeanors, according to State Police.
The charges allege that she falsely told State Police on Feb. 24 that she was choked by a male acquaintance. That man was arrested based on her accusations.
But troopers later got information from a witness who had seen her putting marks on her own neck in an effort to corroborate her claim that she was choked, police said.
Van Guilder was released pending prosecution in Granville Town Court. The status of the charges against the man she accused was unclear Monday.
